Frequently Asked Questions.

Curious about Osprey Studio? We're transparent about our process, our products, and our passion for sustainable design. Find answers to our most common questions below.

  • Yes! Each platter is crafted from stone samples that would otherwise be discarded by architectural firms. These stones come from various global sources like Vermont slate, Brazilian granite, and Italian marble, giving each piece a unique geological history.

  •  Unlike conventional terrazzo, our process uses zero plastic resins, zero harmful chemical dyes, and zero petroleum-based sealants. We've developed a completely natural process using mineral pigments for color and natural plant based sealers.

  • Absolutely. Our boards are sealed with a 100% pure tung oil, one of the only naturally occuring resinous oils in nature, and after the tung oil cures we finish them with a beeswax based finish.

  • Extremely. We're intercepting stone samples that would otherwise end up in landfills, using 100% of the material, and creating our products with environmentally conscious methods and materials. The only “non sustainable” portion of the boards is the portland cement, which makes up less than 5% of the makeup

  • No two platters are identical! Each is a unique piece of functional art - even two boards from the same batch with the same stone and mineral pigment will be completely different due to the nature of terrazzo!

  • Each platter represents weeks of work, from stone collection to custom concrete mixing, casting, precise grinding, and natural sealing. It’s really a labor of love!

  • We typically tell folks to treat it like you might treat a butcher block cutting board -light soap and water is fine, but do not run it in the dishwasher or leave submerged in water over long periods of time. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners. Our natural wax seal provides protection, but occasional re-sealing might be recommended for long-term care.

  • Each platter comes with care instructions and a guarantee. Contact us directly and we can come up with a solution for your unique board.

  • All platters are handcrafted in our small studio at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, ensuring personal attention to every single piece.
